YourBest Editorial Team

The guides, checklists and deadline pages on YourBestTaxes are written and reviewed by the YourBest Editorial Team, the same team that publishes YourBestSavings, YourBestCards, YourBestLoanRates and YourBestCreditBuilder.

What we publish here

General tax information to help you get organized and file on time: the tax document checklist, the independent contractor tax checklist, tax deadlines, states we file and our comparison of do-it-yourself filing options. These pages are not individual tax advice; advice about your own return starts once you are a client.

How facts are sourced

  • Rules, forms, dollar limits and dates come from primary sources: irs.gov (forms, instructions, publications and news releases) and state tax agency websites.
  • Figures the IRS changes each year, such as mileage rates and contribution limits, are shown only for the tax year we checked. When we have not confirmed a new year’s figure, we link to the IRS page instead of guessing.
  • Filing dates are reviewed at the start of each filing season and again when the IRS announces changes or disaster relief.

How pages are verified

Across the YourBest network, rate and product data is checked daily by an automated scanner, and a person on the team reviews each flagged change before a page is updated. Tax rules change less often, so on this site the team re-checks deadlines, form thresholds and dollar figures against irs.gov at the start of each filing season and whenever the IRS announces a change. Each guide shows when it was last updated.

Editorial independence

No company pays to be included or to be listed higher on YourBestTaxes. Some links to do-it-yourself tax software may become affiliate links; affiliate status never changes what we recommend or the order we list options in, and paid links are labeled. See our affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

If you find an error, email contact@bythemath.com (our publisher, ByTheMath) with the page address and what looks wrong. We check the claim against the primary source, fix confirmed errors promptly and update the page date. The network’s full corrections policy and editorial policy apply to this site.

Who prepares returns

Tax returns for clients are prepared and signed by a paid preparer registered with the IRS, separately from the editorial work on this site. See About and how we protect your data.
